Michael’s Legacy Lives On
A Legacy of Love and Hope
Michael Richard Croix Winchester’s story is one of courage, resilience, and the unwavering love of a family determined to give him every chance at life. Born with a life-threatening heart defect, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Michael spent his first year in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, surrounded by tubes, monitoring equipment, and the dedicated care of medical staff. His family faced countless fears—would he survive? Would he ever come home? Through the power of prayer and hope, Michael defied expectations and came home.
At home, Michael’s family continued to fight for him, learning as they went to manage his daily needs. Despite their determination, Michael’s heart could not withstand the strain of his final open-heart surgery. On March 6, 2017, just weeks before his 3rd birthday, Michael passed away.
Michael was more than his condition—he was a joyful, loving child who brought light to everyone around him. His legacy continues through Brave Little Hearts for Michael and Friends, an organization founded to honor his memory by supporting other children and families navigating the challenges of congenital heart disease (CHD).
On March 6, 2018, the Pennsylvania State Legislature declared the date Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome Day to raise awareness of this often-fatal condition, a testament to Michael’s impact and the advocacy sparked by his journey.
Brave Little Hearts will always remember Michael’s tenacity and fight, embodying the family motto: “If we go, he goes.” Despite the odds, Michael not only left the hospital but also traveled with his family up and down the East Coast during his short but full life. His family’s promise to “love him well” is a reminder that love can heal even the deepest wounds.
Michael’s story teaches us that life is not about its length but its depth. His smile, curiosity, and unyielding strength made him a true heart warrior, and his legacy continues to inspire and uplift. Through Brave Little Hearts, Michael’s memory lives on, bringing awareness, support, and hope to families facing CHD challenges.
