At Brave Little Hearts, we believe no family should face the challenges of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) alone. We empower CHD kids and their families by offering unwavering support and letting them know they are not traveling this journey alone. Having experienced this firsthand, we understand how deeply personal and life-changing this path can be.
Brave Little Hearts for Michael and Friends was founded with a mission rooted in compassion and advocacy. Our close partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) CICU serves as a model for expanding our support to other hospitals across the nation, ensuring more CHD families receive the help they need.
CHD is the most common birth defect in America, affecting approximately 40,000 births each year. Of these, about 25% involve Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD), requiring multiple surgeries within the first year of life. To meet the growing needs of these children and their families, funding is essential for the programs and projects that provide life-sustaining resources and hope.

Brave Little Hearts for Michael and Friends began with the journey of a mother whose child, Michael, was born with Hypo-plastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a severe and life-threatening heart defect. With no known cause and no cure, Michael’s critical condition made the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit his home for the first year of his life.
The CHD journey brought unimaginable challenges to the entire family. Determined to give Michael the best possible chance, his mother left her career to become his advocate and caregiver, while his father traveled weekly across state lines to support their family on a single income. Despite the sacrifices, they faced each day with resilience, leaning on their family and learning together to care for Michael’s unique needs.
Through this storm, the family found their light, and they wanted to share it with others. Inspired by Michael’s strength and the love they poured into him, they created Brave Little Hearts for Michael and Friends. Their mission is to support other families navigating CHD, offering resources, advocacy, and hope for brighter tomorrows.
